Synthesis of rutile titania powders: Agglomeration, dissolution, and reprecipitation phenomena
Rutile titania powders were synthesized via a sol-gel/hydrothermal process using nitric acid as the catalyst. A molar acid to alkoxide ratio of 10 and a water to alkoxide molar ratio of 250 produced 100% rutile powders when precipitated below 45 °C. Higher temperatures yielded initially either anatase or mixtures of anatase and rutile. Spherulitic growth produced cauliflower-shaped agglomerates...
متن کاملAmorphous Phase Mediated Crystallization: Fundamentals of Biomineralization
Many biomineralization systems start from transient amorphous precursor phases, but the exact crystallization pathways and mechanisms remain largely unknown. The study of a well-defined biomimetic crystallization system is key for elucidating the possible mechanisms of biomineralization and monitoring the detailed crystallization pathways. In this review, we focus on amorphous phase mediated cr...
متن کاملA novel route for the synthesis of mesoporous and low-thermal stability materials by coupled dissolution-reprecipitation reactions: mimicking hydrothermal mineral formation.
Replacement reactions ('pseudomorphism') commonly occur in Nature under a large range of conditions (T 25 to >600 degrees C; P 1 to >5 kbar). Whilst mineral replacement reactions are often assumed to proceed by solid-state diffusion of the metal ions through the mineral, many actually proceed via a coupled dissolution and reprecipitation (CDR) mechanism. In such cases, a starting mineral is dis...
متن کاملSiderophore-Mediated Iron Dissolution from Nontronites Is Controlled by Mineral Cristallochemistry
Bacteria living in oxic environments experience iron deficiency due to limited solubility and slow dissolution kinetics of iron-bearing minerals. To cope with iron deprivation, aerobic bacteria have evolved various strategies, including release of siderophores or other organic acids that scavenge external Fe(III) and deliver it to the cells. This research investigated the role of siderophores p...
متن کاملAmorphous calcium phosphate phase-mediated crystal nucleation kinetics and pathway.
Generally, a solution nucleation model is used to study biomineralization kinetics. However, we found that the amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)-mediated hydroxyapatite (HAP) nucleation in simulated body fluids (SBF) had a different profile from the linear relationship between ln J and ln(-2) S (J, nucleation rate; S, supersaturation). This behaviour was alternatively explained by a developed h...
